Carbon Credit Certification

In Brazil, carbon credits function as a financial asset generated by projects that reduce or capture CO2, allowing companies to offset their emissions in a regulated (SBCE, under Law 15.042) and voluntary market, where each credit is equivalent to one ton of CO2 avoided, and is traded by companies with sustainability goals or that exceed their quotas.

Credit Generation:

Projects (reforestation, renewable energy, regenerative agriculture) reduce emissions or remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Each ton of CO2 not emitted/captured generates 1 carbon credit.

Validation and Certification:

Independent bodies validate the projects, ensuring that the emission reduction is real and additional, guaranteeing the environmental integrity of the credit.

Trading:

Credits are sold in two markets - the Regulated Market (SBCE) and the Voluntary Market.

Financial Rural Product Certificate (CPRF)

CPRF stands for Financial Rural Product Certificate, an agribusiness credit instrument that allows rural producers to anticipate financial resources, functioning as a loan backed by agricultural products, but with the possibility of settlement in cash instead of the physical delivery of the product. It is a tool to finance investments, inputs, or machinery, and the producer can choose to pay in cash if a better offer arises, without the obligation to deliver the harvest.

Credit for the producer: The producer issues the CPRF to receive money from a financial institution (bank, cooperative).

Financial Settlement: Instead of delivering the product, the producer commits to paying the financial value agreed upon in the certificate, which is based on the market price of a commodity (grains, coffee, etc.).

Flexibility: If the producer obtains a better price on the market, they can settle the CPRF in cash and sell their production freely, without the obligation of physical delivery.

Registration: Since 2021, the CPRF (Certificate of Regularity with the Federal Revenue) needs to be registered with an entity authorized by the Central Bank to be valid.
